The density of plantation
In
the area of Côtes de Provence, the minimum density of a plantation is 4000 vines per hectar. Strangely enough, this number has been interpreted for a long time as beeig the maximum
!!! However this density is insufficient to produce great wines. Just observe the density of
plantation used in other wine growing regions of France.
Since
1988, we replant at 5000 vines per hectar in our vineyard. This evolution is only the beginning of a long achievement of knowledge and comprehension of the vineyard.
The
age of our vines
The
quality of a wine partly depends on the age of the vines. We therefore do our utmost to preserve our old vines, even if this choice is costly. It is indeed cheaper to tear off the old and low
productive vines rather tan preserving them.
The
average age of the vineyard is 25 years with a record of longevity for a plot of Syrah from the year 1962. (By the way, it is one of the oldest plantation of Syrah in the
appellation.
The reasoned practice of agriculture
The
reasoned practice of agriculture obviously means the respect for the environement, but for all winegrowers it is first of all the respect of the soil and the vines by:
using organic amendments (derivates of manure):
working
the soil in letting partly grow the grass in order to support the
microbial life of the soil ;
a
reasoned battle for plant health by observing the soil in order to
avoid over medicalisation, which frigalizes the plant.
